White pelican and roseate spoonbills on an oyster flat in Chokoloskee Bay, Everglades National Park
How I Got the Shot: White pelicans typically come to south Florida in the fall and fly back north before spring. This white pelican was photographed in July, long after the pelicans make their northerly migration. I can only guess that it was old or sick and could not make the flight home. Here, it stands on an oyster bed, as I saw it several times that summer surrounded by the active roseate spoonbills. For this shot, I attempted to paddle as close as possible to the birds. Once stationary, I captured this scene, where the roseate spoonbills were already taking flight and would soon disappear leaving the white pelican alone.
